Hey everybody. Today we're going to pick up where we left off last time with a fun review of events we talked about during the middle of July over the course of our 15 years of podcasting. And as we looked back, we noticed that while the details change and the recurring cast of villains changes slightly, the motifs of media failure, Republican radicalization, and the struggle to tell the truth about both remain remarkably consistent. So let's continue with episode 606, July 9th, 2021, where we talked about blue dots in red states, FTW. On that week's episode of The Legacy Media, griping about why won't Democrats talk about jobs.

Oh, was it that week again?

Yeah. Joe Biden visited the Republican stronghold of Crystal Lake, Illinois to talk about jobs, families, and jobs. He was joined by Democratic Senator Tammy Duckworth and Democratic Representative Lauren Underwood. And we noted that these are two women who are clearly the future of the party and who are sort of the squad without taking all that wingnut heat that the squad gets from wingnuts. And we think that's probably because they're from the Midwest and not from the East Coast. But anyway, uh this was all happening while Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell was complaining about his own state of Kentucky getting federal funds under the Recovery Act. He didn't want his own state to get money, apparently. And he also bragged that no Republican had voted for it. And yet, you know, he would be re-elected over and over again by Republicans.

And Kentucky got a big old chunk of that money.

Republican Representative Chip Roy went on the record saying 18 more months of chaos and the inability to get stuff done. That's what we want. Well, you know, yeah.

Yeah, no. And this is because Biden's president. This is how you govern as Republicans in the House. When asked about it later in the week, Roy doubled down. Chip Roy, oh my gosh. He said plans, he plans to oppose almost everything that Congress does and fight with every ounce of my being to stop the radical left and weak Republicans. Adding, for the next 18 months, Republicans' job is to do everything we can to slow down and block the Democrats' radical agenda and then win the majority and lead.

Yeah. Trash it all. Trash it all and then rule over the rubble. That's that's their plan. Uh we noted that this was shaping up to be an even more vicious replay of the fights from the from the 1990s that led to the passage of the welfare to work legislation. Any success that welfare to work had was due to the enormous labor shortage of the mid to late 1990s, very much like the labor shortages we were experiencing back in 2021. Facing a hostile Republican House under Gingrich and a GOP that wanted to kick everyone off of everything, Bill Clinton rejected the first six proposals from the GOP and held out for a very robust support system that would allow people on welfare, mostly single mothers, to be successful in the workforce. I know an awful lot about this because my ex helped write the white paper for how to handle welfare to work in Chicago. So I have a deep knowledge of what was going on then. And it was the best of a bad situation. There were wraparound services that provided childcare and transportation and government-funded training and various other services, all of which employers were good with because they needed workers. They were willing to go along with this because we can't fill the positions we have for people working at a hotel. So they were willing to meet uh workforce development folks more than halfway. Now we have a very similar condition. This is back in 2021, but with a president who was present at those fights and learned from them. From Clinton, Biden learned that if you want people to work, sometimes they're gonna need help from the government. And from watching Obama getting burned over and over again, his vice president Joe Biden learned there's no point in trying to cater to the pundit class at all. Now, I opined at the time that what we really needed was a sweeping retraining program called Wing Nut Welfare to Work.

And he succeeded. Uh at the time, I listened to Joe Trippy's inaugural podcast as a senior advisor to the Lincoln Project. And among the ahistoric piffle he was floating, the funniest was him pining for the good old days before Trump, when political operatives on both sides of the aisle fought hard, but they respected each other, behaved civilly towards the other side. And I said, Hey, Joe, Rick Wilson is sitting right there. You know, Rick Wilson.

And this week was the week that Donald Trump announced a class action suit against Twitter and Facebook, which prompted Alan Dershowitz, Jesus, to pronounce this the quote, most important First Amendment trial of the 21st century, causing virtually every lawyer who's not Alan Dershowitz to laugh until it hurts.

Yeah. Trump told his chief of staff in 2018 that Hitler did a lot of good things, according to a new book by Michael Bender. The remarks shocked John Kelly, Bender reports, detailing the former president's stunning disregard for history.

This um also happened to be the week that the U.S. military vacated Bagram airfield in Afghanistan after nearly 20 years. The airfield was handed over to the Afghan National Security and Defense Force, effectively ending America's longest foreign war. The plan was that the U.S. would continue to pay nearly $4 billion annually until 2024 to finance the Afghan security forces. However, since the Afghan government and security forces collapsed almost immediately after the U.S. pulled out, this plan, of course, never went forward. Now, according to Brown University's Costs of War project estimates, from 2001 to 2022, the United States spent about $2.313 trillion on the Afghanistan War, including operations in neighboring Pakistan that were part of the conflict. This figure includes military operations, State Department of War spending, veterans' cost incurred to date, and interest already paid on war borrowing. This also includes $145 billion in appropriations for Afghanistan reconstruction and state building efforts. This includes government, infrastructure, economic development, counter narcotics, education and security assistance, all of which we paid for. Roughly 90 billion of that went specifically to training, equipping, and sustaining the Afghan military and police. Yeah, how'd that work out? And the U.S. also directly funded the Afghan government, functions, salaries, and security force payrolls for many years. One estimate cited by the Cost of Wars project notes the U.S. taxpayers were providing roughly $750 million annually for Afghan soldiers' payrolls. And after those two decades, that's an entire generation, all that money, all that training, all that equipment, the Afghan government proved it could not stand on its own for a week without us being there.

Yeah. Yeah. Uh 55% of Americans say ensuring access to voting is more important than tamping down on voter fraud. But it breaks down like this. Among Democrats, it's 85% who said voting access is more important, while 72% of Republicans said making sure no one votes who isn't eligible was more important. So they need to clamp down on those widowers at the at the uh Florida senior homes, Driftglass.

However many it was, 200, 200 misspent ballots out of, I don't know, 150 million votes cast. Yeah. But Republicans know that's the real problem because those immigrants are coming over the border and they're becoming voters, and millions of them voted and cheated poor Donald Trump out of his out of his presidency. And in a 6-3 ruling also this week, along ideological lines, the Supreme Court's Conservative Justices upheld two Arizona voting restrictions and pretty much gutted section two of the Voting Rights Act, that landmark 1965 civil rights law. From Elena Kagan's dissent, what is tragic here is that the court has yet again rewritten in order to weaken a statute that stands as a monument to America's greatness and protects against its basist impulses.

There were 172 public school teachers in Texas who are currently using donors choose to buy basic school supplies like filler paper and pencils for their students, versus Texas governor Greg Abbott, whatever happened to that guy, and the Texas GOP trying to ram through a racist voter suppression bill that would make it much harder to vote for people like the parents of those public school students. Also, Texas Democrats were once again on the run, forced to flee the state in order to delay the GOP-backed voter restrictions. They stayed in Washington, D.C. and asked the U.S. Congress, please help us.

We consider that a misdemeanor. And so you are you are law license is safe with us here in Texas.

Uh the Biden administration's 2021 child tax credit started being dispersed on July 15th. It reduced child poverty massively. Like 50%, like cut it. Great success. Yeah. And of course, Republicans destroyed it. Uh, Senate Democrats revealed a $3.5 trillion plan to invest in healthcare, climate change, and more. The measure which would include money to address climate change, expand Medicare, and fulfill other Democratic priorities, is intended to deliver on President Biden's economic proposal. If we pass this, this is the most profound change to help American families in generations, said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. More on this later.

Yeah. During the same week, the Trump Justice Department attempted to seize Washington Post reporters' email data one day before former A.G. Bill Barr left office, we learned.

Tennessee decided it liked the dark ages and didn't want to leave. So, due to pressure from Republican lawmakers, Tennessee abandoned all vaccine outreach to minors, not just for COVID-19. A state vaccine expert was also fired.

Can't have those experts hanging around, Bluegale, raining on everyone's parade. Two Washington Post reporters, Carol Lenig and Phil Rucker, wrote that General Mark Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, likened Donald Trump's efforts to hold on to power after the 2020 election to Adolf Hitler, saying the president was preaching the gospel of the Fuhrer, with his lies about the election being stolen and that Trump had led the country to the brink of its own Reichstag moment.

In response, Trump attacked General Milley yet again, this time in a more than 400-word rant, denying that he had ever threatened or spoke about to anyone a coup of our government, calling the notion so ridiculous. So, you know it actually happened. Definitely.

This really is a speaking of somebody who disappeared from public view, moved to Florida, by the way. One of the private companies hired by Arizona Republicans to audit millions of ballots cast during the 2020 election, is working to reverse the result of a free and fair election for partisan gain. House Oversight Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney, Democrat of New York, and Representative Jamie Raskin, Democrat of Maryland, who lead a House Civil Rights Subcommittee, have asked the firm's CEO to send them a whole bunch of documents related to the audit, including information about who is paying for it.

But uh former Trump campaign advisor Jenna Ellis, again, a blast from the past, quit the GOP in protest, but not for the reasons you usually hear. Instead, Ms. Ellis was mad the RNC was not more batshit crazy and more willing to scream about the big steal 24-7. So she's quitting, quote, until the party decides that it wants to be conservative again, unquote.

In local news, news channel 20 had a story about how Governor Hedgefund cost the state of Illinois, Bruce Rouner, cost the state of Illinois nearly 120,000 jobs during the pandemic. We had a severe COVID-19 cluster here in Springfield at a local senior center, but the story didn't end with bodies being taken to the morgue. Instead, because most of the residents were vaccinated, no one died. A few people were infected, but their symptoms were mild, and only one required hospitalization.

Yeah. Which brings us to July 15th of 2022, episode 659, all about the J6 hearings and Brad Parcal. Every day you can find examples in the mainstream media at that time of people trying to score points by taking gratuitous shots at Joe Biden, which felt an awful lot like 2016 all over again.

In its seventh public hearing, the J6 committee detailed how divisions between White House lawyers and outside advisors pressing Trump to pursue election fraud conspiracy claims exploded into an unhinged meeting that featured screaming, personal insults, accusations of disloyalty, and a challenge to physically fight.

The J6 committee notified the Justice Department that Trump contacted one of its witnesses who hadn't publicly testified yet. Oh, you really, really aren't supposed to do that. After our last hearing, President Trump tried to call a witness in our investigation, a witness you have not yet seen in these hearings. Liz Cheney said, that person declined to answer or respond to President Trump's call and instead alerted their lawyer to the call. Their lawyer alerted us. Trump should have been good witness tampering. He should have been in jail that fucking day, that same fucking day.

A Fulton County judge ordered Lindsey Graham, remember Lindsey Graham, to testify before. Yeah, he's uh he well, you know, ill here in Illinois, they are flying. Our governor has our flying the flags half staff for Lindsey Graham.

And I thought that was appropriate because he's he was half a man and he always blew, he always blew in whatever breeze was blowing in whatever direction he was blowing. So that's true. In a dark way, is perfect for Lindsey Graham. Anyway, they ordered the not then dead Lindsey Graham to testify before a special grand jury in Georgia. That's investigating Trump's attempt to overturn the 2020 election. Golly, that was a really big story back then. Judge Robert McBurney described Graham as a quote, necessary and material witness, unquote, to the grand jury, and ordered him to testify on August 2nd.

One month before the state's primary election, Wisconsin's Republican Supreme Court has ruled that most ballot drop boxes aren't allowed in the state. The court also ruled that voters are required to physically return their own absentee ballots, meaning a voter can't have someone else return their completed absentee ballot on their behalf. It's very anti-senior citizens voting. And I don't think the Wisconsin Supreme Court is Republican anymore, Dirt Glass.

No, I think they I think some shit like this caused uh things to change a little bit in Wisconsin, but it was so naked. It was so out in the open. Uh Senator, uh I'm sorry, Senate Democrats reached an agreement with Joe Manchin. Isn't that weird? Like negotiating with him like he's a sovereign country unto himself, which he sort of was. Senate Democrats reached an agreement with Joe Manchin to raise taxes on some high earners to keep Medicare from going bankrupt. The plan, effectively, a slimmed-down version of the Build Back Better Act that Manchin skilled last year, you remember that, blew that out of the water, would impose taxes on certain income from pass-through businesses. The tax is expected to raise about $203 billion over a decade, which would be used to sustain Medicare's key trust fund until 2031.

Back in 2017, Garrett Ziegler told the local paper that he loves writing and media relations, so you knew he was bent. Ultimate, excuse me, Altamont, this is where Garrett grew up, is in Effingham County, which is deep, deep red conservative. In Effingham County, Illinois, 19.5% of the people voted Democratic in the last presidential election, and 78.6% voted Republican. So to all those savvy pundits who are still mystified about how the GOP ever got this way, this is how they got this way. This is how they raise them out here in the heartland. This is what the savvy pundits have refused to see all along, but what we see all around us every day.

You might find it remarkable that outlets touting their economic foresightedness and keen analysis could be continually surprised about the economy's strength after 29 consecutive months of job growth, inflation steadily declining, durable goods having been up for three consecutive months, 35,000 new infrastructure projects, an extended period in which real wages exceeded inflation and outsized gains for low-wage earners. It's as though outlets are so invested in the narrative of failure and imminent recession that reams of positive data have little impact on their narrative. Have you met the media, Jennifer Rubin? She continues, part of the problem might be the media's preference for a political horse race coverage over events on the ground. Where have I heard that before, Blue Gow? Uh what do voters think about what, about the media's own negative spin on the economy, replaces what is going on. When the media consistently gets big stories wrong or fails to cover major economic changes, one would hope they'd look back to explain why their coverage diverged from reality and do a better job of covering actual developments rather than GOP talking points, process stories, how Biden is selling his plan and polling. Unfortunately, waiting for the mainstream media to engage in self reflection. E.g., maybe it overdid the Butter emails in 2016. Maybe there was no red wave in 2022, let alone self-correction might be a waste of time. Unquote.

He's done that since February. As a result, the Marine Corps are without a confirmed leader for the first time in 164 years. And the nominations of more than 200 general and flag officers are currently stalled in the Senate. Toberville is protesting the Defense Department's reproductive health policies, which offer time off and travel reimbursement to service members, female service members, if they cannot obtain abortions because they were raped. I'm going to add that in their state and they can't get an abortion.

So he's willing to bribe his way under the debate stage. Vivek Ramaswamy's approach was much more vertical marketing and herbal life-ish, offering supporters who raised funds for him to earn a commission on the money they bring in.
